FlexJobs | Find A Better Way To Work

Welcome to the final steps of our job search challenge. The following steps talk about how to put a cherry on top of your job search with some key ‘extras.’ One of those extras is leveraging some key activities so you can stand out to recruiters.

Previously, we talked about how important it is to tailor your resume to the role you are applying to. This is important for applicant tracking systems, of course, but there is also great value in tailoring your resume for recruiters. Tailoring your document helps recruiters find the key highlights on your resume that match the job description. Keep in mind, recruiters read a lot of resumes, oftentimes spending just 6-11 seconds per resume in their initial scan. So, making sure yours has the right keywords will help show your fit for the role, and for the organization.

Another way to help yourself stand out is to look up and find the recruiter or hiring manager’s name so you can address your cover letter to that person. A personalized cover letter shows you’ve taken some initiative and that you have done some research regarding them and the company. Not to mention it is always nice to be addressed personally rather than as Dear Hiring Manager or the VERY dated: To Whom it May Concern.

Including things like your LinkedIn profile link as well as a link to your website or portfolio (if you have one) in your resume contact information will ensure all your materials are in one place and easily accessible to the recruiter looking at your resume. Recruiters do use social and digital channels for hiring purposes, so whether they are looking for candidates or learning more about job applicants, chances are they are going to search for you on LinkedIn or Google. Sharing any of this information ahead of time will save them time in the long run, and will help you stand out with those who are in charge of finding candidates!

The career expert team has put together a webinar specifically aimed at this topic - how to work with recruiters. We invite you to take a look at the presentation and additional links and resources included below:
