Welcome to step 3! Now that you have taken the time to figure out what you want to do with your career and have reflected on your top skills and accomplishments, it’s time to update your resume!
When approaching your resume, it is crucial to keep a key theme in mind - your audience. Ask yourself, “what will be relevant to the people who will be reading your resume?” Are there elements currently on your resume that may be irrelevant to the job or career field that you are applying for and could, therefore, be omitted? Are there new skills, experiences, or responsibilities that need to be added?
The essential question is, “how can I take my skills, achievements, and experience and shape it to be relevant to my audience?”
One of the best places to start is to carefully examine the job description of the position you are interested in and use that as your guide, because this gives you clear insight into what your audience wants to see. Look at the tasks they outline, the transferable and technical skills they mention, and the qualities or attributes they are seeking in potential candidates. This information is extremely valuable in determining how to revise your existing information, as well as developing clarity on what skills you may want to brush up on or learn.
Consider crafting a solid professional summary and key skills section at the top of your resume. This area can be extremely useful in tailoring your resume for a specific job posting. Review the posting carefully, then find ways to incorporate keywords and phrases from the job description into your summary and key skills sections. This will not only help as an ATS or Applicant Tracking System scans your resume, but also provide the hiring manager with an immediate understanding of how you possess the skills and experience they are looking for.
Another important element is the use of accomplishments-based language and success metrics to demonstrate examples of how your skills and experience have made a positive impact. Explaining relevant details about the methods you used to accomplish your tasks and achieve your goals can help the hiring manager envision you in the role for which you are applying. Just remember, keep it relevant to your audience!
