Welcome to step 2! Your commitment to working through each of these 21 steps is going to help you create the momentum you need for a successful job search, so I’m glad you’re continuing on with this next step! This step is going to focus on identifying your top skills and proudest accomplishments, so you understand your value and can emphasize it more effectively!
Job seekers are in a competitive landscape, and today’s step is to hone in on your skills and accomplishments which will help you elevate your status as a candidate and improve your ability to capture the attention of hiring managers and recruiters.
What’s the best way to figure out your career accomplishments? First, take a look at your current resume, performance reviews from previous positions, and any other records you’ve kept since beginning your career. Take time to comb through those documents and highlight areas where your effort made a positive impact or anything that brought you recognition, a promotion, or any awards. Make note of these accomplishments and the skills you used to achieve them, as they are an important part of communicating your value to a potential employer.
Next, see if you can validate any of your accomplishments with numbers, percentages, or other data (employers love data). Even if you can’t quantify your successes, think about examples you can give or stories you can tell that will show the positive impact of your accomplishments. Then, carefully select high points or career victories from each position you’ve held.
From here, your goal will be to select the accomplishments that reflect the specific skills and requirements of each job that you are applying for. Take note of what is listed in the job description and then choose the most relevant highlights that you can include on your resume and cover letter.
As your career progresses, be sure to keep a record of future achievements, promotions, and other wins so you can easily access them when you need them next. In the description below, you’ll find some additional action items and resources to help you with this important step in the job search process.
